The dynamic beauty was inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai’s [1760-1849] ’36 Views of Mount Fuji’ series. Translated as ‘floating world’, ukiyo-e woodblock prints—a collaboration of artist, publisher, carver and printer—first drew upon the hedonistic urban pleasures found in the courtesan quarter of Edo [now Tokyo], later evolving, through Hokusai’s powerful work, into lyrical scenes of nature that influenced landscape painting throughout the world.
